DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa's Republican candidates for governor talked tough on immigration in their second campaign debate, and two said they would push for restrictions like those that have sparked debate in Arizona.

Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats said he supports the Arizona law and would press for its adoption in Iowa.

Five-term state Rep. Rod Roberts also endorsed the Arizona measure. He said he would custom tailor a program and "work proactively." He focused on denying benefits to illegal aliens.

But former Gov. Terry Branstad issued a cautionary note. Branstad said this isn't Arizona, and Iowa is not a border state.

Arizona's law makes it a crime to be in the U.S. illegally and lets police question anyone they suspect of being an illegal
immigrant.
