KIRKSVILLE, MO --
A longtime local radio DJ is hanging up his microphone.
After more than 37 of radio broadcasting, Marvin McClanahan is officially retired. He's known for his show, "Marvin in the Morning," which later became "Marvin and Helen in the Morning,” on KTUF. McClanahan first became interested in the profession by watching his cousin who was a radio announcer.
“I just kind of idolized him and somebody would say, you sound a lot like Jerry, and I thought hmmm....I could be a radio announcer, so that's how it started. I started at a station down in Macon at KLTI at 19,” said McClanahan.
After serving in the military for a few years, McClanahan was hired at KIRX in 1972. He was moved to the morning show on KTUF 12 years later.
“I like the contact with listeners, the feedback from them when they tell you they start the day with us, and how we're a lot of help to them. People are hollering at me now out and about saying congratulations on your retirement, I said, well I hope so,” McClanahan said.
McClanahan attended the Country Music Awards in 1985 where he received the Small Market Broadcast Personality of the Year. He was also honored with the Missouri Broadcasters Association Editorial of the Year in 2005.
