BROOKFIELD, MO --
For six ladies at the Life Care Center in Brookfield, age will not allow them to slow down. In August of 2009, Clara Milligan, 84, started making necklaces in honor of her cousin who passed away from Alzheimer’s. Since then, a group of six members formed in which they have made over 200 necklaces, grossing a net-income of $1,200.
“The money generated goes into a council fund, and then it can be used for different things” said group member Bernice Montgomery, 95. “The money helps fix school supply boxes for school children and also boxes for troops overseas.” Montgomery also said that a certain amount of the money generated is used to take the ladies out to dinner or the show.
Group members range from the young age of 82 to 95 years old. Each of the long beads stranded onto the necklace are carefully rolled by hand from church bulletins, calendars, and magazines. Although their eyesight is meek and hands not as steady, these ladies put their hearts into this talented craft.
If you would like to purchase one of these necklaces, you can call Brookfield Life Care Center at (660) 258-3367 and mention this story. Necklaces cost $6.
