LANCASTER, MO. -- Two candidates are running for Schuyler County sheriff following the October death of longtime Sheriff Donnie Bruner.

Greentop resident Josh Dole and Acting Sheriff Carl "Fritz" Gottman will square off in a special election next month.

Gottman, the Democratic candidate, previously worked as Bruner's chief deputy for all the years Bruner was sheriff.

He said he believes he's ready to take over the job full-time.

"I've been doing it for quite awhile. I mean I've had all the schooling, and we have to have so many hours (of training) every year extra on (top of) what we already had when we were certified, so we keep that up," said Gottman.

Gottman's Republican challenger is Josh Dole of Greentop.

Dole is a 2008 graduate of Culver-Stockton College in Canton, where he received a degree in Criminal Justice.

Dole told KTVO he thinks it's time for a change at the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department.

"I just think it's time for new blood to help the community out, get new ideas in there, work on grants, focus more on grants, more money for the department," said Dole.

The special election for Schuyler County Sheriff is set for December 15.

Bruner died in October after suffering a heart attack.

Time for a change.

Many times in an election, parties advertise experience, experience, and experience, and how the choice is clear due to this. However, through personal experience, currently if I were in an accident, I would call the MO State Patrol. Getting a report that is unbiased from the locals who know practically everyone in the county is virtually impossible due to the “good ole’ boy”. If there is any way possible to rule the accident no fault, it will be done, which is great if you are at fault, but not great for the other party. Also when it gets right down to it, even though it is a private matter, some of the relationships that take place I feel are inappropriate for a professional department that handles very important legal business. I have called before and asked if they know where the Sheriff might be, and the response is we’re not really sure, we’ll have to try and page him. I believe that we should know where our Sheriff is at all times and they should report in and out when they are on duty.

good luck fritz

i hope fritz gets the job. That's all we need is some kid in office that don't know anything about how the local sheriff department is ran

I just wanted to say that I hope all voting residents will take into consideration that Josh Dole grew up in this county and has a college degree in Criminal Justice. While Fritz has served this community well I think it is time for a change, someone younger who is more educated and will take positive steps to shape this community. Best of luck!

" Good Luck" Josh
