ADAIR COUNTY, MO. -- A combine went up in flames on Thursday afternoon.

It happened in a bean field along Banner Lane in Adair County on Carla Truitt’s property northwest of Gibbs.

Ross Fortney of Kirksville was operating the combine when he says he noticed flames shooting out from under the front of it.

He dove off and says when he looked up, it was almost fully engulfed.

Fortney hurt his ankle from the fall, but was otherwise okay.

Fire crews from LaPlata and Atlanta responded.

Fortney says the combine was insured.

Witnesses speculate the fire may have been sparked by an electrical malfunction, but officials haven’t released an official cause.
