MEMPHIS, MO --

A World War II sniper from Memphis, Missouri recently had an opportunity to put his marksman skills to the test.

Ted Gundy lost his leg after he was hit by a sniper, but at 84 years old, he proved still a good shot.

“I was watching the Outdoor Channel and I thought, how can you shoot a sniper rifle at 1000 yards? So I emailed Jim Scoutten with the Outdoor Channel and I said how do you shoot a side rifle at 1000 yards?” Gundy said.

After writing back and forth for awhile, Scoutten made it possible for Gundy to visit Ft. Benning, Georgia where he got a chance to shoot with the best snipers around.

“I shot the first shot, probably nervous, I missed it,” said Gundy.

Gundy ended up hitting three out of five when shooting from 1000 yards.

“Then I got to shoot my snipers rifle, they had it sighted in that they gave me at 300 yards, and I hit that three times. I was tickled...they rolled out the red carpet for me, you don't know how good they were,” said Gundy.

A special from Gundy's time in Ft. Benning will be shown on the Outdoor Channel in late December or early January.
