ELDON, IA -- Two faculty members at Cardinal Community School District are being called heroes. Superintendent Frank Shekleton and teacher Jessee Andrews helped save the life of student seventh-grader Jesse Garber who was choking at lunch Tuesday.
Security cameras captured the entire event as Garber was choking on a walnut from her ice cream.
“People said my face turned purple,” said Garber. “They were shaking and crying.”
Shekleton and Andrews first arrived. Andrews went to call 911 and Shkleton begun the Heimlich maneuver.
“I started summing up the situation realizing that I needed to do the Heimlich maneuver because she was choking on something,” said Shekleton.
“They were pretty shook up,” said Andrews. “I know when I first took off they were a little frantic but when they realized we had it under control it kept them down.”
Shekleton was able to dislodge the walnut and Garber says her friends have given her advice..
“They say I shouldn’t have walnuts for awhile.”
