ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis-based utility company Ameren Corp. is cutting about 300 jobs - or about 3 percent of the company's 9,700 total work force.

About 100 of the cuts came through buyouts. Ameren announced the cuts on Friday, and said most will be effective by the end of the year.

President and CEO Thomas Voss says the moves are necessary because of the current economic conditions. He cited rising costs and decreasing use of energy by large industrial customers.

Ameren serves 2.4 million electric customers and nearly 1 million natural gas customers in Missouri and Illinois.
