KIRKSVILLE, MO --

If you haven't picked up a good book lately, you might join in the Big Read Project that is coming to Kirksville.

Truman State University received a grant that will provide the community with 400 copies of The Things They Carried, a book about the Vietnam War.

This is Kirksville's first time hosting a community reading project, which will take place from January to April of next year.

“The idea of the big read nationally is to engage adult reading in serious reading. There's been a decline in serious reading among adolescents and adults in America and the National Endowment for the Arts is very interested and concerned about that,” said Co-Directors Sam Minner and Mona Davis.

Besides reading the book, participants will engage in group discussions and screen movies. If you’d like to know more or sign up for a discussion group, call Mona Davis at 785-4383.

Thanks to those people at Truman who are going the extra mile to bring the university and community together. I look forward to taking part.
