KIRKSVILLE, MO --
The first ever "Celebrating our Abilities" event is coming up Friday at the Shrine Club in Kirksville.
The event is put on by R.A.I.L., or Rural Advocates for Independent Living and the Kirksville Division of Developmental Disabilities. The public will have a chance to check out informational booths and hear speakers throughout the day. Organizers say the event is a way for people who can't attend conferences to get free information.
“If you've ever been curious about what different resources are out there to support you in meeting your needs or your goals of independence, now would be a good time to come by and check it out because there might be an answer there for you,” said Coordinators Theresa Myers and Terri Yelton.
The event will wrap up with entertainment by a role model and advocate for the disability field.
“We all have a tendency to put ourselves in boxes and if you can think a little bit outside that box, you can grow and anytime you can help somebody grow, that's my whole goal. For me, as an entertainer, by that third song you forget the chair. I have people ask me all the time, how long have you been confined to a wheelchair or wheelchair bound, I've never been stuck to it with superglue,” said B.J. Davis, Singer/Songwriter/Comedian.
The event starts at noon and the entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. Everything is free of charge, except the B.J. Davis concert which costs $10 per person.
