KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Kirksville City Council voted to sell a piece of the city’s land to Aaron Rodgerson for $570.00.

Aaron Rodgerson is a city councilmember.

Rodgerson abstained from the vote on Monday night, and so did Councilman Todd Kuhns.

“I’m not opposed to the purchase. There’s nothing shady going on. I’m just worried about the public perception of a council person being voted some land, so I just abstained from the vote,” Kuhns said.

The city says they advertised the sale and tried many options.

They originally acquired the strip of land at 1113 North Don Street because the previous owner wasn’t paying taxes.

Councilman Aaron Rodgerson was the only bidder.

Todd, you tell us to save our opinions for something that matters. Is not the sale of city land and the price the city gets in return important? It obviously was important enough for the council to vote on it. Since when is it your right to abstain from representing the peopel of Kirksville? You were elected to represent us, not your personal opinions. I am disappointed that you have chosen self above duty. If there was nothing wrong with the sale why not approve it. If you are embarrased by the actions of the council then be a voice for change. I think we are just upset because you have no other reason than personal desire to not be a part of the vote.

selling land

Since when does land go so cheap in Kirksville? I don't remember seeing a public sale on it, was there? If not shouldn't all the back tax land and house be put up for public bid first.........

Don't BS the Public

Todd, every vote counts, unless you have specific interest that would be conflicting, you should vote.If you are worried of how it might look to the public, then mabe you shouldn't even attend the meetings, grow a pair and say what you think at these meetings or get out.

doesn't every city issue matter?

i guess we should focus on larger city issues like awnings. then we'd get a full vote.

you were elected into office to speak for the people, not for yourself.

so are you saying you'd vote for it because "there is nothing wrong with aaron's purchase" or against it because you "don't want to raise red flags by voting against it?"

you not voting for/against it raises red flags.

i'll bring up an old saying, "don't complain if you dont vote" (i did by the way so i feel like i can write this) and present you with this nugget, don't take a position of public office to serve the city and not fulfill your duty.

My prerogative

There's nothing wrong with Aaron's purchase, so I didn't want to raise red flags by voting against it. I just didn't want to be a part of this transaction one way or another, and it's well within my rights to sit on the sidelines if I so choose. So save your criticism for something that really matters.

refusing to vote

his refusal to vote in the matter is against everything he is on council to do; speak for the people. i guess a good portion of the town decided to stay out of the issue as well.

aren't personal beliefs supposed to be seperated when in office anyway? aren't you supposed to decide on what's better for the masses?

i think you have a bigger concern in that you've lost more than your voice

You are supposed to vote!

Dear Council Member Kuhns,
You were elected to vote. That means make a decision. If you are worried about what the public perception is and the political ramifications then you are not fulfilling your job. While I may not always agree with your decisions, I appreciate that you are one of the few that actually will talk about the issue. But come one Todd, you voted for the alcohol and special use issue and that wasn't a clear cut issue. I certainly don't agree that the city government should be telling me that I have to have commercial grade sprinklers in my new home while the older, more dangerous homes get by, but you voted for that. Please Todd, if there was nothing wrong with this deal then vote. If there was something wrong with this deal then vote the other way. But to sit on the sideline for no other reason than to avoid public scrutiny? That is not why you were elected. I merely ask that you continue to do what we elected you to do.
