While kids across the heartland headed out to trick or treat Halloween night, the Adair County Sheriff's Office was out working to keep them safe.

KTVO went on patrol with Sheriff Bob Hardwick Saturday as he checked to make sure sex offenders in Adair County were complying with Halloween laws.

The laws that went into effect last August require sex offenders to remain in their homes Halloween night from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with all outside lights off and a sign posted saying that they don't have candy.

Sheriff Hardwick along with 8 other deputies performed the sex offender compliance checks throughout Saturday night.

“We're just hoping for a quiet Halloween and a safe Halloween, and my deputies are out working along with the Kirksville police department, and we're going to help one another,” Hardwick said.

There are 48 registered sex offenders in Adair County and Sheriff Hardwick said that several were noncompliant although an exact number is not yet available.

Hardwick says he'll turn the names off those sex offenders that did not follow the law Saturday night over to Adair county prosecutor Mark Williams.

Thank you Sheriff for keeping our kids safe. I guess some one just asking to go back to jail. I’m interested in reading your report on why they were not complying. I hope you through the book at them.
