OTTUMWA, IA. -- Some Ottumwa students received a special lesson that was out of this world Monday.
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and several schools in the Ottumwa School District had a visit from a local astronomer.
Joseph Lazio is originally from Ottumwa and even attended Horace Mann Elementary School and Ottumwa High School.
He wants students and parents to know how far his local education has taken him.
“The Ottumwa Community School District can provide a very good public education. I was a product of it and I think I got a very good education here. But then as well to talk about what is out there in addition to Ottumwa, not only in terms of the space thing but there are many kinds of jobs that a good training in science and math can get you one of them being astronomy,” said Radio Astronomer Dr. Joseph Lazio.
Lazio works at the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC and is one of the scientists that decided Pluto is no longer a planet. He spent a large part of his time Monday showing students the science behind that discovery.
