MACON COUNTY, MO. -- The flu has struck in the Heartland, taking a heavy toll, attendance wise, at one particular school. KTVO learned Tuesday an unusually large number of students are out of school due to illness in the Bevier school district in Macon County.

Macon County Health Department Administrator Judy Rushton told KTVO that nearly 100 students were home sick Tuesday. The school district has a total of 250 students.

There has been one lab confirmed case of H-1-N-1, among the students that are ill, while there have also been several confirmed cases of influenza type "A". Rushton told us the health department is treating the flu situation in Bevier as an outbreak.

Informational letters have been sent home to parents in the Bevier School District.
