KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A special guest made an appearance in Kirksville Saturday in the name of fire safety.

The Novinger Northern Fire Department held a fire safety and prevention event at the south McDonalds, starring Smokey the Bear. With Fire Prevention Week coming up, fire fighters spent the day teaching kids what to do in case of a fire. Kids could climb in the fire truck and take a look at the firefighters gear and equipment, and of course, meet Smokey the Bear.

“We had a great day. We expected about 100, 120 kids and we did hit about 100 which made us happy to inform the children on what to do, and we had a good day, and Smokey enjoyed his day,” said Barry Mitchell with the Novinger Northern Fire Department.

Fire Prevention Week starts on October 4.
