Growing up in northern Appalachia, I was terrified and fascinated by severe weather.

MACON COUNTY, MO. -- A northeast Missouri kennel released more than 40 dogs to the Missouri Department of Agriculture after failing to bring her unlicensed facility into compliance with the state's regulations.

The breeding facility was located in Macon County, Missouri.  The dogs are now being held at an animal shelter in St. Joseph.

It's believed that the owner of the facility was illegally keeping Yorkshire Terriers and other dogs ranging from six to eight years of age on the property.

“The state was doing their job in regards to trying to bring her up to standards.  She realized, the state realized that she would never be able to meet their standards and in the best interest of the animals and herself, she relinquished all of the animals to the state,” said Animal Control & Rescue Manager Rick Smith.

Smith says many of the dogs needed medical treatment for dental problems and infections.  However, most of the pets will be put up for adoption after being cleared of health concerns.
