LINN COUNTY, MO. -- A small northeast Missouri community is mourning the loss of its second city official in less than two months.

Atlanta Alderman Roger Smid, 68, died in a car crash in Linn County Wednesday morning.

Atlanta Mayor Kenny Wilhelm died November 4 after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Investigators say Smid lost control of the car. It traveled into the median where it overturned and then crossed the oncoming lanes of traffic.

The crash happened on a slippery Highway 36, seven miles west of Brookfield.

The vehicle came to rest on its side.

Smid's daughter and son-in-law were passengers in the car.

Cynthia Maher, 49, of Callao, received minor injuries in Wednesday's crash.

Shawn Maher, 41, was seriously injured when he was thrown from the car. He is hospitalized in Columbia.

Smid was also ejected.

Officials at Atlanta City Hall say Smid was a wealth of knowledge, always gave thoughtful advice and only wanted what was best for the City of Atlanta.

Acting Mayor "Mini" Baker said Smid was one of her biggest supporters.

"After the tragedy with Kenny, he put his arm around me when we came in here, and he said, 'Mini, I'm behind you 100 percent. Don't worry. You're going to do fine,'” said, Baker.

Funeral arrangements for Smid are pending with Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home in Macon.

"He was just a very sweet, good-hearted man, you know. You couldn't ask for a better person. Yeah, you couldn't ask for a better person," said Baker.

Roger Smid's wife died unexpectedly in October. The family members were on their way to Arizona Wednesday when the car crash happened.

They were going to spread Smid's wife's ashes in Arizona. Thelma Smid of Atlanta died unexpectedly in late September.

Another small northeast Missouri community is being affected by the crash.

Shawn Maher is the police chief for the City of Clarence.

City officials say Maher suffered head injuries as well as two broken legs and two broken hips.

They told KTVO he underwent surgery Thursday at University Hospital in Columbia. When we checked with hospital officials on Friday afternoon, we were told Maher has been upgraded from serious to good condition.

Neither Maher or Smid was wearing a seat belt.

Smid was pronounced dead at the scene by Linn County Coroner Kenny Creason.
