KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Twenty-five dogs from the Adair County Humane society will soon become New Yorkers.

Many of the dogs have already been adopted in New York, courtesy of the Best Friends Rescue organization. Volunteer and Humane Society board member Lonnie Byrn loaded up the pooches in his van and transported them to Columbia, something he's been doing for over a year now.

The dogs will board a private plane and head to their new homes in the Big Apple. Byrn says he loves transporting man's best friends because they are so loveable and will never let you down.

Adoption

Well, I think it's a good thing that they have sent the dogs away? What about the people here in Kirksville. As I am sure we are all aware, puppy mills are out of control in this area. Most of us can get any dog we want pretty cheap from them. However, if we go into the animal shelter to adopt a dog, we are denied. It's ridiculous. I have spoken to 3 people within the last few weeks who were all denied an animal from the pound for ludicrous reasons. It's almost as if they would rather leave them in cages, than adopt them out. Someone needs to look into this. Personally, I feel that they are NOT better off living in a cage their whole lives as compared with giving a first time pet owner a chance.
