LA PLATA, MO --
The La Plata community observed the upcoming holiday a little early with the first ever Veterans Day Parade.
More than 50 entries turned out to pay tribute to area veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces. The organizers of the event are passionate about honoring veterans because they each have a personal interest in the holiday.
“I have several family members who are veterans or who are currently serving. My family had a float in the parade today and we had 12 names on our float and we also have, my nephew PFC Adam Thomas was killed in action in Afghanistan in August of 2003, so it's just part of our family to honor our veterans and honor our soldiers,” said Co-Organizer Tabitha Sawyer.
Sawyer says they'd love to hold the parade again next year if there is community interest.
On Veterans Day, November 11, the La Plata community will be hosting a free community luncheon for area veterans and one guest at the Silver Rails Center at 11:30 a.m. There will also be “Tribute to the U.S. and Local Veterans” in the High School gym at 2:00 p.m.
