KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A tractor/trailer takes out a stoplight at a busy Kirksville intersection.

The mishap took place just before 3 p.m. Monday at the corner of Marion and Jefferson Streets.

Police said a semi driven by Melvin Comer, 58, of Bloomfield, Iowa, was southbound on Marion, and he bumped the traffic light pole with the side of his trailer as he was making a right-hand turn onto Jefferson Street.

The pole and traffic lights came crashing down on top of a parked pickup truck, denting its hood and busting the windshield.

Comer told KTVO he was turning sharply to avoid a car that was in the turning lane on Jefferson.

He said once the truck made contact with the utility pole, he heard it, and as he turned to look in his mirror, he saw the pole and everything falling over.

Believe it or not, even though the traffic lights were laying on the sidewalk, the red and green lights were still functioning properly.

Officials from the Kirksville Public Works Department estimate it will cost about $25,000 to replace and install the stoplights and pole.

They told KTVO is will probably be at least 12 weeks before they can get the pole.

In the meantime, the other traffic lights are flashing red, and crews have put up stop signs where the lights are missing.

Officials urge everyone driving in that area to use extreme caution.

Poor drivers

The trucker was attempting to manuever his rig around a driver who did not afford him the courtesy of space to pull his rig around the corner.
Yet another reminder to be courteous of truck drivers. This is their job and those who do not have a CDL need to be aware that they need extra space and patience when they are on the road!

Just wondering

Does any one else still have a problem with the new curbs? I drive a car and have had problems making a turn with the light being green just because another car is making a right turn on a red light. I think it is not safe and I am not surprised this happened. I don't blame the truck driver for the accident. It was bound to happen since they redid the streets and curbs.

Don't blame the truck driver anymore than the thoughtless driver of the car who pulled up past the
white line in the turn line. Half the students and
adult population would fail a driver's test in this town. Just look at how most pull into the middle of the intersection trying to beat the light for a left turn. They both should have to pay.
