A serious accident Monday afternoon closes Highway 6 just east of Novinger, Missouri at about 4:00.

Officials say an Oldsmobile driven by 34-year-old Pedro Arriola of Milan, Missouri was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane attempting to pass traffic.

That's when the Oldsmobile slammed into a Plymouth driven by 45-year-old Lorrie Whittaker of Novinger.

Whitaker was taken to northeast regional medical center in serious condition.

Arriola's passenger, fourteen-year-old Walter Hernandez of Milan, was taken by Air-Evac to University Hospital in serious condition.

He had to be extricated from the car.

“As soon as he got over the van jerked the wheel and hit him. The van went off in the ditch and the Bravada spun,” said Cody Helm who witnessed the accident.

Highway 6 was closed in both directions for more than an hour.
