MEMPHIS, MO --
On March 31, flames engulfed the Main Street Cafe on the west side of the square in Memphis, Missouri.
“We had to basically gut everything. We were very very fortunate and the structure of the building was ok, however all of the interior walls and everything that we had put in on the lower level had to be gutted out, they were all fire and smoke damaged,” said Owner Jeanne Snodgrass.
Jeanne and Dave Snodgrass had just celebrated the cafe's one year anniversary three days before the fire. After the blaze they had to replace the kitchen equipment, but worked hard to restore the cafe to its original appearance.
After about 4 months of construction and rebuilding, the owners are happy to be back in business.
“Business has been great since we reopened. We get to see lots of our regulars coming back, lots of new faces. We made a few changes to the menu so that was exciting,” said Snodgrass.
Locals who frequent the cafe everyday were glad to see its doors reopen. The restaurant is known for being a quaint place to eat.
“It's got kind of a city atmosphere to it, but yet in a small town. It's got like the brick walls and it's got kind of the food that you would see in the city. Salads, pasta dishes, things like that, they're just really really good,” said Patty Simerl, a regular.
The owners say the Main Street Cafe wouldn't be up and running without the community's support.
“We had a lot of help from just employees. We didn't really have lots of extra money to pay and a lot of them that were coming back came and helped us clean and helped us clear things out so that we could get reopened, family and friends who came and just sort of helped out, and that support actually probably made it possible for us to open in under 4 months,” Snodgrass said.
