BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- Some concerned citizens are taking it upon themselves to save their G.M. dealership after the auto giant declared bankruptcy earlier this summer.
A handful of Bloomfield residents are spending their evenings at the Davis County Fair dispersing packets of information to visitors.
They’re starting a letter-writing campaign to inspire residents to write messages to General Motors and lawmakers.
Residents hope their letters stop the auto giant from closing the only remaining dealership in town, Mikels Inc.
Jeanne Dixon helped organize the effort and says now is the time to act.
"Davis County has had a dealership for 89 years, so it's time we do something to support these people. It's going to hurt us badly if we lose them. It's going to hurt us with taxes and with salaries and things going out of the community,” Dixon said.
The concerned citizens are acting because they fear the dealership could close in October of next year.
"We hate to lose another car dealership. We lost Ford this spring and ya know the response to this package that we have at the fair is great, but the people that pick up these packets have to realize you can’t take them home and leave them lay on the kitchen table," said Concerned Citizen Larry Miller.
KTVO talked to the car lot's owner today to learn the business's status.
He declined to comment on the situation saying he signed an agreement with G.M. stating he wouldn't release any information.
