OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The City Public Works Department is advising motorists that crews will be patching on the block of 4th Street, between Market and Court Streets. This patching project will commence on Monday, July 6 and should be complete by mid-week. No parking will be allowed in the westbound lane of that block, on the north side of 4th Street, during the work. Two-way traffic will be maintained, however, drivers can expect reduced lane width during the work. The project will consist of milling the areas of deficient paving, clearing the hole, application of tack oil and filling and leveling an asphalt patch.
Patching is still occurring along sections of North Court Street this week. The process moves fairly quickly but requires temporarily closing a lane of traffic in the work zone. When approaching and entering work zones, motorists should slow down, be alert for workers, equipment and other vehicles. Be prepared for delays near work zones and seek alternate routes as needed. The City appreciates motorists’ patience and regrets any inconvenience this maintenance work may cause.
Under Iowa Law, the penalties for speeding in a work zone are: $150 for up to 10 mph over the posted speed limit, $300 for speeds from 11 through 20 mph over the limit, $500 for speeds from 21 through 25 mph over and $1,000 for speeds in excess of 25 mph over the posted speed limit. Fines for other traffic violations committed in a work zone are doubled. The law applies to state, county and city public roads.
