RUTLEDGE, MO. -- A report of a possible shooting over the weekend ended with two arrests, but no charges.
The Scotland County Sheriff's Department was called to a home on Oak Street in Rutledge just after 11 p.m. Saturday.
When officers got there, they found two intoxicated men who had been assaulting each other.
“We weren't sure who assaulted who so we were trying to figure out who was going to be charged with assault. Upon determination that neither person wanted to be victim, they were both released,” said Wayne Winn, Scotland County Sheriff.
Arrested were Jeff Engelbrecht, 38, of Rutledge and John K. Pruett, 34, of Macon.
They were put in jail on 24-hour hold.
After investigators were unable to determine who the victim was, both men were released without any charges being filed.
Winn told KTVO shots from a .22-caliber weapon had been fired inside Englebrecht's home.
"Upon arrival at the scene and investigation of the scene, it was determined that there was nobody hit by the bullets. A gun had been fired inside the house/residence of Jeff Engelbrecht," said Winn.
Pruett was taken to the hospital where he was treated for injuries he received during Saturday night's fight.
He was then released from the hospital and taken to jail for 24 hours.
The Memphis Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with Saturday night's altercation in Rutledge.
