KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Soon it might be legal for college kids to pack guns around campus. The Missouri House voted to lift a ban on carrying concealed weapons at state colleges Wednesday.

We talked with the Director of Public Safety at Truman State University, who doesn't think this will really affect the campus. He says it's hard to stop someone if they plan a shooting.

“These acts a lot of the time are planned out by the perpetrator. It doesn't necessarily, it's not just a campus, there's been shootings at churches, post offices, malls, so I think a determined person can pretty much kind of plan, do what they can to carry it out,” said Tom Johnson.

Johnson says it's too soon to tell what will really happen if the ban is lifted. The Missouri Senate still has to vote on the issue.

What if CCW was allowed during the dark day at Virginia Tech? If only one student was carrying it may have made a difference in the body count.

Less vulnerable equals safer

The 23 age limit for concealed carry means that proffessors are more likely to benifit from this then students.

However anything that makes the classroom less vulnerable and better able to defend themselves is going to make them safer from these nuts looking for easy kills so they can die famous.

CRAZY!!

Guns on campus? That's nuts.

No more obsessed than you are with your 1st Amendment right to get on here and spout paranoid fears of armed groups in the class room. Maybe you need to take a class about guns or government and learn about what you speak of.

I would LOVE to teach in a class full of Concealed Carry Permit holders, at least I would be in a class of law abiding citizens.

21 years old is now a KID?

Since when is a 21/23 year old a "KID"? You have to be 21 years old to even leagaly own a firearm. It is a felony to be in possesion of a firearm and be intoxicated at the same time. Those who have licenses to carry, are very familiar with the laws and are resposible.

Understanding the law

The current law states a person must me 23 years of age and in good legal standing with a long list of 'can not's'. Most college students are under this age limit. You are not going to have a teacher with a 'room full of students packing guns' or 'a group with everyone carrying a gun'. This will not happen and hasn't happened. If anything, it would be a benifit to the instructor's or professors who could legally carry a gun to protect themselves or their students in case some nut tries to hurt them. Guns are not the issue. People use various tools to hurt someone every day. If a ball bat or piece of pipe or knife or can of gas and a lighter or a car is used, you don't hear everyone wanting to ban them. Why guns? Because it is easy to blame and humans always want to blame something even if it isn't correct.

Logic is way off

To the Mother of a student at kirksville, we should probably pass a bill that would disallow the biology department and chemistry department from experimenting with those dangerous chemicals, right? Or perhaps we should disallow bleach and cleaning supplies from the dorm rooms because they can produce meth, right?

Why are you assuming that people who have concealed carry permits are going to go buck wild some day with guns? How many gun related crimes have been committed by people with concealed cary permits? I haven't heard of any, and if you can, please provide data. Thanks.

I feel safer...really.

As a college student, I am glad the state legislature is working to lift this ridiculous ban. What has the ban done for us so far? Well, it prevents law abiding citizens from carrying a gun on campus...making them easy targets for anyone who plans to shoot up the place.

Laws are for people who follow them...ie: criminals will do whatever they want. Gun bans merely make it easier and more effective for them to do so.

Kids?

College kids? You're generally over 18 when you attend college and therefore an adult.

Have we become so obsessesd with 2nd Amendment rights that we have no common sense? How would you like to teach in a room filled with students packing guns or be a student in a group where everyone is armed? As the parent of a student at Truman I am more than a little outraged that our illustrous legislators are telling everyone it is just fine to be armed--where anyone that is disgruntled about something can shoot first and think later!
