OTTUMWA -- He has a skill for mathematics and the game of golf, but Ottumwa High School Senior, Corbin Gardner, says he began learning at an early age.
"And ultimately I would say it goes back to my sister, who…when she was in first grade, she used to teach me her math problems when I was still not in school and so I think that really helps, you know, because a good foundation is always important,” said Corbin.
And now, following the advice of a college guidance counselor, Corbin plans to attend Law School at Creighton University in Omaha.
“Everyday as I just live my life, I realize more and more that I think it’s the right fit for me. Hopefully college will help reinforce my passion for law,” Corbin added.
“He has a lot of charisma, he works hard to develop relationships with students and with teachers both and I think that helps his education,” said mathematics teacher, Brooke Fischels.
He expresses appreciation to his parents, sister and teachers for their support. He is also a young man proud of his hometown.
“Sometimes you just feel like…it’s your home, you know, you’d like to stay there so like I said, I want to go get a law degree but to come back and practice law here and be a member of the Ottumwa Country Club for the rest of my life would be something that I’d just be thrilled about,” said Corbin.
Corbin also has this advice for those striving to achieve academic and personal success.
“Get involved in all the opportunities that your school presents you, if you have a minute interest in anything, pursue it and make friends while your at it…I really just think that getting out there and having some fun while your at it is the best way to have a good time and maximize your experience in high school," said Corbin.
“I predict that Corbin will be very successful in life no matter what he decides to do. I’m sure that at Creighton he will enjoy both law school and opportunities with the golf team …he will find success along the way,” added Fischels.
