KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Even in the recession, many indicators show the healthcare industry for the most part is still booming.

And you don’t have to be a nurse of a doctor to reap the benefits.

Fact-Finder learned there are many job openings for emergency medical technicians, and there is an Emergency Medical Training class in Kirksville.

But the job really isn’t for everyone. “It’s definitely not a Monday thru Friday, 8-5 job. We run 24 hours shifts here. You sleep here for those 24 hours and this is your home. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not bad,” E.M.T Josh Waddle said. Waddle works for the Adair County Ambulance District.

The E.M.T. course in Kirksville is put on the by Adair County Ambulance District, the Kirksville Area Technical Center, and Northeast Regional Medical Center.

The class meets for 4 hours, 2 nights a week for 5-6 months. It costs $375.00, plus roughly $100.00 for textbooks.

“The class definitely wasn't easy. It took time and it took a lot of studying. It was very interesting. If you are interested in helping people and you are interested in healthcare, it is something that is going to be easy to pick up on and useful tools you can use anywhere,” Waddle said.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. and pass a basic skills test.
