LA PLATA, MO -- Thanks to the hard work of a local organization, La Plata, Missouri is recognized as an important place in history.
After a year in the making, the Friends for La Plata Preservation group announced that the downtown square is on the National Register of Historic Places. This means that business owners can apply for federal and state grants and tax credits to restore their buildings.
The preservation committee hopes that through these grants, the La Plata square will be restored to what it once was when the town was thriving.
“A lot of these buildings were restaurants, and there was a lot of agriculture businesses, basically there was something for everybody on this square. You could do all your shopping for your home, your farm, anything you needed right here on this square, back in the day,” said Bob Cox, FLPP President.
The preservation committee is now working on renovating the old Green Theater.
