LA PLATA, MO -- Thanks to the hard work of a local organization, La Plata, Missouri is recognized as an important place in history.

After a year in the making, the Friends for La Plata Preservation group announced that the downtown square is on the National Register of Historic Places. This means that business owners can apply for federal and state grants and tax credits to restore their buildings.

The preservation committee hopes that through these grants, the La Plata square will be restored to what it once was when the town was thriving.

“A lot of these buildings were restaurants, and there was a lot of agriculture businesses, basically there was something for everybody on this square. You could do all your shopping for your home, your farm, anything you needed right here on this square, back in the day,” said Bob Cox, FLPP President.

The preservation committee is now working on renovating the old Green Theater.

If you think that Don's gift shop is something that needs to be brought back. Get started on it. Start attending FLPP meeting and get involved. I myself do not know anything about his store but I am always willing to learn.

The downtown square could only be restored to its original grandeur if we bring back Don's Gift Shop.

Ok, downtown La Plata will never be the same. It was the same before Don's Gift Shop was taken down.
