CENTERVILLE, IOWA -- John Irwin of Centerville Iowa is KTVO’s Scholar of the Week. And although he is only a high school senior, he is already an accomplished musician.
"I started piano in 3rd grade and didn’t start band until 5th grade, but I’m not so savvy on the piano anymore," said Irwin.
He plays many instruments, from trumpet to euphonium. And while john excels in band, he believes that he will turn his focus toward technology when he begins college.
"Well, I plan to go to Iowa State for computer engineering and I might do a master’s program. I might just double-major in computer engineering and electrical engineering," said Irwin.
John’s band teacher credits him with providing leadership through example to his fellow band students. And they apply this to their academic work.
"They learn work ethic and responsibility and when they apply that to their other subjects, then they do very well in other subjects," said Band Director Jim Deprizio.
He also acknowledges his parents for their unwavering encouragement. And he plans to continue developing his musical talent, even if he decides to become a computer engineer.
"I plan to stick with music definitely after high school. And i like to play jazz band and i play a lot of other instruments on the side," said Irwin.
Congratulations to john Irwin of Centerville High School, the Heartland Scholar of the Week.
