OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Although students are discouraged from text messaging at school, Ottumwa schools plan to start texting parents of its students.

Ottumwa schools are implementing a new form of alert system they believe will bring them into the 21st century.

The Ed Alert Program allows parents to sign up to receive school updates by phone or email.

The Ottumwa School District believes that parents will be better informed of cancellations, delays, emergencies and other information if distributed through these new venues.

"Ed Alert will allow us to inform subscribers to emergencies such as a water main break or a loss of power. It will also allow different buildings and principals to notify parents of important events for their building,” said Steve Hansen, Principal.

To sign up for Ed Alert, you can simply follow this link below and click on the Ed Alert at the top of the “Quick Links” list.
