Rubber sidewalk also environmentally friendly

Monday, August 18, 2008 at 12:33 p.m.

AMES, IOWA (AP) -- A new sidewalk project in an Iowa college town is aimed at putting a little bounce into beer kegs instead of dings in the sidewalk.

The city of Ames is installing a rubber sidewalk at a spot near the Iowa State University campus where beer distributors unload hundreds of kegs from trucks for area bars.

The heavy kegs have been cracking the concrete pavement. So officials have decided to install sidewalk pavers made by a California company using recycled tires.

The city's streets supervisor tested the project by taking a sledge hammer to it. The new sidewalk didn't even dent.

In addition to bouncing beer kegs, the project offers an environmental plus. The sidewalk uses about 675 tires that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

But I have seen a news story where the shredded tires used on playgrounds caught fire. It was because of a cutting torch while taking down playground equipment.

ok this has to be a Ford better idea sounds good until

am a V.F.D. here now i will say for a area that is heavy damaged this is great ...but i know someone will come up with the idea R&R all the sidewalks in the city... can we say Fransisco, and the Chicago fires? might as well dump cyanide and gas all over the city if it catches... why dont you think DOT will not allow rubber roads..

Not true

Dude your an idiot and do not know much, the rubber they use is soaked up to a year in a solution that makes the old rubber non-flammable. Please know what your talking about before you speak.

Ahh--i am so glad you are interested my foriegn friend-have you ever seen rubber tyres burn??

well--rubber sidewalks are made from a rubber product.
unlike solid rubber--shredded rubber burns much faster and hotter, and much more easlly..

and i will pray tell you why..entrapped oxygen and smaller particles.

so i will also pray tell you how. exactly, how its done,to rubber playgrounds and of course sidewalks.in fact anywhere this fine shock absorbing product is used.

get a can of fuel, open the cap,and simply trail it along for as long as you have fuel over the rubber sidewalk-- or --according to taste--you may have a big can or a small can,you may wish to prove a hypothesis ,or,light up the streets.your choice, its your experiment,,

then of course.finally.you drop a match in it.

the results will delight any pyromaniac, youth,or college student.male or female.

so--now you know--rubber is mostly oil,and oil burns,
oil burns a lot better when shredded, and i suppose this might surprise you.it doesnt surprise me..

thanks a bunch--

And how, pray tell, is one to ignite a sidewalk square? Rubber or no, this strikes me as a difficult and difficult to disguise endeavor.
