COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA (AP) -- Severe thunderstorms ripped through Iowa Friday, killing two people on the western side of the state when a tree fell on the car they were in.

Both men sitting in the front seat of the vehicle were killed when the tree smashed down about 5 p.m.

A woman was trapped in the back seat and a back-hoe was used to lift the tree from the car and free her. Sergeant Jason Bailey of the Council Bluffs Police Department says the woman was injured, but the injuries weren't severe.

The names of the storm victims weren't released pending family notification.

Severe thunderstorm warnings and flash flood watches were issued across the state and continued overnight.

Baseball-sized hail was reported near Earlham about 30 miles southwest of Des Moines. Tree damage was reported near Slater and Cambridge.
