NOVINGER, MO. -- An Adair County woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her husband nearly two years after he was fatally shot outside the couple's home near Novinger.
Kay Young, 53, of Novinger was indicted Monday afternoon by an Adair County Grand Jury on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the March 2006 shooting death of her husband, Melvin Griesbauer.
Young is being held in the Randolph County Jail on $2.5 million bond.
She was arrested Monday evening as she pulled into her driveway at her residence just west of Novinger, where Griesbauer was killed two years ago this month.
"She has always been a 'person of interest' so a lot of the focus on materials that had been coming in and/or interviews of witnesses, things of that nature, were geared towards how could we connect Kay Young to this incident, said Mark Williams, Adair County prosecutor.
Williams told KTVO he couldn't get into specifics right now.
A second suspect in the case is Young's friend, 54-year-old Katherine Mock of Cassville, Missouri. She is also charged with first-degree murder.
Mock was arrested shortly after the crime, and she has been in custody at the Adair County Jail for the past two years. Her trial is set for July.
Authorities say Griesbauer died from a single gunshot to the head. His body was found by a barn near his home.
An interesting twist in the investigation: authorities recently dug up the body of Young's mother, Celia Hammons. Investigators apparently have some questions about how she died back in 2000.
"I don't want to go that far as far as who our suspects are in that situation. Again, it's just kind of based on the information we had regarding potential causes of death and the fact that there was not an autopsy done at the time," Williams said.
The results from Hammons' autopsy won't be ready for possibly six weeks. KTVO will keep you posted.
Because Katherine Mock is jailed at the Adair County Law Enforcement Center, Kay Young is being held at the Randolph County Jail in Moberly.
