Friday, May 20, 2011  There are a number of streets in Kirksville that are in desperate need of repairs.Street crews are making their rounds this spring to fix those headaches otherwise known as potholes. They're using a machine that blows the dirt out of the holes, fills the pothole with an oil mixture and then they allow that oil to harden. Streets that are getting the most attention in Kirksville are Normal, South First and Cottage Grove. Kirksville's Street Supervisor  Ray Sandstrom explains what causes these annoying potholes in the first place. "We notice a lot in the early spring. In the winter, it freezes at night then moisture goes into the cracks and then traffic hits the holes and the holes get bigger," Sandstrom said. City officials also will be taking on a big project once school is out for the summer. Baltimore to Cottage Grove will go under a makeover. The project is expected to begin sometime around June 6th and should last for about three weeks. If you have any complaints about streets, you're urged to contact the Kirksville Public Works Office.

Monday, April 18, 2011  The 2011 street improvement program is about to get underway in Kirksville. The city with have about $720,000 to use that will help to update certain roads around the city. $150,000 will go to curb, drainage and storm gutters and $570,000 will go to asphalt and concrete pavement. The city usually has about $1.2 million dollars a year to make improvements to roads, but due to extra money given to the Jamison Street project the city will have less money to work with this year. 8 total streets in Kirksville will undergo a makeover in a 4 to 5 month span. The crews are only able to work on the roads during the summer and early fall due to the winter weather that barrels down on Kirksville. Head engineer for the city of Kirksville Carl Brooks said there is a certain process that is used every year to find out which roads need it the most. "There is a software program that we call PAVER and we try to do an inventory of our streets, 25 percent of our streets every year. We have over 100 miles of streets, so we are looking at 25 percent which is about 25 to 30 miles of streets. We are looking to get out there and visually try to see what condition they are in," said Carl Brooks. To view the streets that will undergo the makeover process in 2011, click here.
