The 2011 street improvement program is about to get underway in Kirksville.
The city with have about $720,000 to use that will help to update certain roads around the city.
$150,000 will go to curb, drainage and storm gutters and $570,000 will go to asphalt and concrete pavement.
The city usually has about $1.2 million dollars a year to make improvements to roads, but due to extra money given to the Jamison Street project the city will have less money to work with this year.
8 total streets in Kirksville will undergo a makeover in a 4 to 5 month span.
The crews are only able to work on the roads during the summer and early fall due to the winter weather that barrels down on Kirksville.
Head engineer for the city of Kirksville Carl Brooks said there is a certain process that is used every year to find out which roads need it the most.
"There is a software program that we call PAVER and we try to do an inventory of our streets, 25 percent of our streets every year. We have over 100 miles of streets, so we are looking at 25 percent which is about 25 to 30 miles of streets. We are looking to get out there and visually try to see what condition they are in," said Carl Brooks.
