KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Kirksville Police Department (KPD) is getting a new animal control truck to replace the current one.

At Monday night’s meeting, the Kirksville City Council approved the purchase of a 2013 ¾ ton, two-wheel-drive pickup equipped with a six-compartment animal control unit.

Lovegreen Ford in Kirksville was the winning bidder with a bid of $32,761.

The vehicle will also be used for parking enforcement and other KPD administrative tasks.

City officials told KTVO the current truck badly needs to be replaced.

“That truck has well over 200,000 miles on it,” said John Buckwalter, Kirksville public works director. “It's a 2003 model, and it has become a maintenance burden."

You can expect to see the new KPD animal control truck on the streets in early to mid-May.

Another $1,250 has been budgeted for markings for the vehicle and for the labor to switch the police radio from the old unit to the new one.

Also at Monday night's meeting, the Kirksville City Council approved a bid for $130,600 worth of pipes and fittings for new water line construction projects.

Council members also approved the formation of a Friends of the Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery Committee.

They approved the appointment of Dwight Buckingham, Betty McLane-Iles, Jason Haxton and Larry Olson to that newly created committee.

The council also approved three lot splits.
