OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Performing arts will be coming back to Wapello County.

The American Gothic Performing Arts Festival will hold its opening season this summer, starting in June. Three shows, one held at the McHaffey Opera House in Eldon and two at the Bridge View Center in Ottumwa. The first, Smoke on the Mountain, will be the first live performance at the opera house in almost 100 years.

The second, Go, Dog. Go! is geared at children and the third, Peter Pan, will feature flying on stage. All three productions will showcase the talents of local singers, actors and musicians, which is what the festival is all about.

"Our American Gothic Performing Arts Festival isn't all just about the shows, but it's also about people in our region who have so many talents have a chance to share this with others," said Miriam Kenning, secretary of the summer festival.

Smoke on the Mountain will run June 7, 8 and 9, Peter Pan on June 29 and July 4, 5 and 6 and Go, Dog. Go! July 2, 3 and 5.

While some performers have already been recruited for the productions, open auditions will be held in April for anyone who would like to be involved.
