OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The esteemed Gene Schultz Award was given to one very deserving person last night at the Partners in Progress Banquet in Ottumwa Thursday night.

This person is someone who gives others credit and recognition, is a worker as well as an organizer and is enthusiastic about Ottumwa just to name a few of the criteria of the award.

John Hunolt, a resident of Ottumwa for more than 30 years was the recipient of this year’s Gene Schultz Award.

“It's a real honor. I know Rose Schultz and a lot of the recent recipients. I know -- it’s just a real honor and really surprised too. I try to be involved in the community but I don't do it for any awards or anything; I just enjoy contributing to my community,” said Hunolt.

Hunolt has been a Salvation Army bell ringer for many years, participates in its food distribution every month, is a Habitat for Humanity volunteer and animal shelter volunteer just to name a few of his contributions to the community.

Congratulations John!
