BLAKESBURG, IOWA -- Parents and community members in the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont School District are letting the school board know they're not happy with future possible cuts to the district's Agricultural Program.

The school board is proposing a 25% cut to the Agri-Power FFA chapter in Eddyville, which would reduce the number of available Ag classes in the district from eight to six, and only five offered at the high school.

The school board is meeting at 6 p.m. Monday for its regular meeting, and community members plan to show up in force to express their opinion and to hopefully prevent cuts to this program.

"It's a very successful program in the state and in this district and, you know, we sure hate to see programs like that fall by the wayside," said Heather Angle-Gardner, former Eddyville FFA student. "Especially because we have such large corporations like Cargill and John Deere right in our backyard and a lot of the students out of this program go to work for those kind of companies."

Angle-Gardner said she knows there are mandatory cuts that have to be made, but said she hopes the school board will look into other options when it comes to those cuts.

The meeting tonight will be held at the administration building at 222 Walnut Street in downtown Eddyville.
