WAPELLO COUNTY, IOWA -- On the evening of March 10, 2013, the Ottumwa Police Department and Wapello County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center lost the ability to receive 911 telephone calls. The inability to answer the 911 calls was caused by an air conditioning unit malfunction which damaged the telephone equipment.  All 911 calls were rerouted to the Mahaska County 911 Center in Oskaloosa.

Until repairs are made to the equipment, all 911 calls coming into the Ottumwa Police Department and Wapello County Sheriff’s Office will be rerouted to the Mahaska County 911 Center. When the Mahaska County 911 Center receives a 911 call from the Ottumwa or Wapello County area, the information is forwarded to the dispatch center at the Wapello County Law Enforcement Center.

Both the Ottumwa Police Department and the Wapello County Sheriff’s non-emergency lines are functional.
