Man facing sex-related charges waives preliminary hearing

PUTNAM COUNTY, MO. -- A Heartland man, facing 20 sex-related felony charges, has waived his preliminary hearing and had his case moved up to circuit court.

Kenneth Shumate, 32, of Unionville, Missouri, is charged with nine counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, eight counts of first-degree statutory sodomy, two counts of second-degree statutory sodomy and one count of sexual abuse.

Shumate is being held in the Davies-Dekalb County Regional Jail under $1 million cash only bond.

He waived his preliminary hearing.

His next court date is set for February 20 in Putnam County Circuit Court.

Shumate's attorney has filed for a change of venue and change of judge.

Mercer County Prosecutor John L. Young has been named as special prosecutor for the case.

Shumate is being represented by Kirksville Attorney Kristen Williams.
