KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Belly dancing originated in the Middle East, but it has quickly made its way to America.

Ashley Tomten of Rejuvenate Massage Therapy and Spa teaches belly dancing classes.

She currently holds classes on Tuesdays starting at 6 p.m. at the mini mall behind the movie theater in Kirksville.

She will begin having classes on Sunday, February 9.

She said at first, what attracted her to belly dancing were the sparkly costumes.

“My favorite thing is performing,” Tomten said. “It's just something I like to do is perform. Teaching is fun because you get people excited about it.”

Tomten will have a grand opening celebration on Friday, February 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be free chair massages, henna tattoos, a belly dance performance and more.
