KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It's a program designed to help all kinds of caregivers finally take care of themselves and to give them more tools to help care for a relative or family friend.

The Northeast Missouri Rural Health Network is offering the free program called, "Powerful Tools for Caregivers.”

The classes will be held over six weeks, in both Memphis and Edina, and they start next Tuesday.

The classes at the Knox County Council on Aging will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The classes at the Scotland County Senior Center will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Glenna Daniels Young with the Northeast Missouri Rural Health Network said any age caregiver can benefit from the class topics.

“One of the sessions is on taking care of you because if you don’t take care of yourself as a caregiver you're not going to be able to help anyone else,” Young said. “Another topic is identifying and reducing personal stress. Another topic would be communicating feelings, needs and concerns and different techniques you can use to do that. Another one would be about communicating in challenging situations there’s also a class on learning from our emotions and one on mastering caregiver decisions.”

A handbook and relaxation tape will be provided to all attendees.
