OTTUMWA, IOWA -- A Facebook "like" contest is teaching Ottumwa students about the world.

The Iowa Kids University group was hoping for 500 likes on their Facebook page by Christmas, and they got that many and more.

Now, with January as National Mentoring Month, the group is shooting for 600 likes by the end of the month. Executive Director Sue Huff is also a Kiwanis member, and she said reaching out to fellow Kiwanians has brought in "likes" from across the globe. Seeing each like come in from various countries is helping the kids learn about the world around them.

"We also have a world map, we have been getting likes from all over the world and so we're also using it as a geography lesson for the kids so they can see that through social media and the Internet you can actually make friends all over the world," Huff said.
