KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- People who do great work and often go unnoticed were honored Friday night.

The Direct Support Professional of the Year award was handed out at the Moose Lodge in Kirksville.

It was hosted by Peter Leidy, an internationally known speaker, entertainer and consultant.

During the month of September, individuals with disabilities all over northeast Missouri had the opportunity to nominate someone for the award.

“(This) is the first time that we've had the Direct Support Professional of the Year awards,” executive director of the Adair County Senate Bill 40 Developmental Disability Board, Debra Wohlers, said.

“It’s a night to honor those folks who serve people with developmental disabilities and other types of disabilities. Those who work right there with them everyday making sure there lives are full and just as productive and happy as they can possibly be. We thought they deserved a special night just in their honor.”

Wohlers said the award went to Cody Stoneburner of Learning Opportunities Quality Works.

He will receive $100.
