KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Cadets from Truman State University’s Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) will participate in its fall semester Field Training Exercise (FTX) at Sugar Creek Conservation Area Sept. 21-22. Cadets will stay there for 36 hours, sleeping in the woods overnight in addition to completing training in land navigation, weapon familiarization and basic first aid skills.
“Each training opportunity is provided to the Cadets in order to develop, or improve upon, these perishable skills,” Cadet Battalion Commander Warren Galloway said.
The purpose of the FTX is to prepare Cadets for the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC), which they must attend between their junior and senior years.
“The Cadets are charged with planning, preparing, resourcing and executing all phases of the FTX. It is the best leadership training there is and the Cadets come away from the weekend experience with more confidence in themselves and more connection with their fellow Cadets,” professor of military science, Lt. Colonel James Tenpenny said.
The Truman State University Army ROTC program works with students to prepare them to become Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. The program strives to instill a sense of honor, community and duty into the lives of the Cadets, in and out of the classroom.
