KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A few unsung heroes of the Kirksville community were recognized Monday night.
The 2012 Still Spirit Awards were handed out to four deserving individuals who embody the spirit of ATSU's founder, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, making northeast Missouri a great place to live.
The first honoree was Dr. Royce Kallerud, who was recognized for his professional and volunteer efforts, including chairing the Forest Lake Area Trails System committee and working tirelessly to make the trail project a reality.
The second person honored was Troy Mihalevich, who was recognized for his efforts as president of NEMO Heart Health Incorporated, and his efforts to get automated external defibrillators placed in dozens of locations around Kirksville.
The third person honored was Roger Johnson, who for more than 30 years has made quiet contributions to the community, making volunteer activities and charity fundraising a way of life.
Johnson's efforts have raised $40,000 for various causes.
And the fourth honoree was Doyle Dover.
Described as an angel and the epitome of a Good Samaritan, Dover was recognized for, among other things, chauffeuring those fighting cancer to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, showing them around the huge medical facility and for providing his RV for them to stay in.
The other nominees were Myra Baiotto, Randy Behrens, Pat and Eleanor Ellebracht, the “I Think I Can Foundation,” Kristie Swaim, Jamey and Bridget Morton, Ken Read, Jeff and Marilyn Romine, George Scheurer, Steve and Judy Taylor, Larry Whitney and John and Shawn Wichmann.
All of these people were nominated by community members.
