ELDON, IOWA -- A minor fender bender involving a bus full of Cardinal Elementary School students and another car leaves a few kids shook up Tuesday morning.

Around 7:55 a.m., a school bus was turning into the Cardinal Elementary School driveway off the highway and lightly tapped a stopped car that was at the end of the driveway.

Principal Cindy Shepherd got onto the bus after the fender bender and talked with the kids to make sure they were okay.

“So I assessed the situation along with the school nurse and we actually had an off-duty police officer who’s a parent and he was down there when it happened so he kind of helped out too. If he had not been there, we would have contacted the authorities. He helped with directing traffic and that to avoid anything more major happening,” said Shepherd.

From there, Superintendent Joel Pedersen was notified who then placed a report with the Department of Education which is required anytime a school bus is involved in an accident. Parents were also notified shortly thereafter by Facebook, e-mail and some by phone.
