FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- The award-winning Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk kicks off the outdoor art celebration with a new theme, Mile of Art, Friday, May 1, on the Square from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Mile of Art will feature an open-air art gallery and various exhibits in a multitude of art forms.
The Fairfield galleries, art venues and shops will open their doors featuring their latest wares and artistic energy. The open air art gallery on the Square is an exhibition for both established artists and for brave new talent in an accessible art event.
Vendors around the Square including screen printed original designed shirts, award winning hand beaded jewelry, semi-precious stone and pearl necklaces, oil paintings and sketches, fine art photography, crafts and ceramic platter, plates, trivets and coasters. There will also be food vendors complimenting the restaurants around the Square.
The 1st Fridays Art Walk Mile of Art will bring the return of live music to the square. The sounds of Van and the Movers will begin from the gazebo at 7:30 p.m. Van and the Movers, Fairfield’s purveyors of the Blues will be serving up the dancing and listening sounds of both classic and contemporary blues music in the Chicago, Texas and West coast traditions. The Greater Ottumwa Vocal Arts Project (GOVAP) will kick off the Art Walk at 6 p.m. GOVAP, in its 16th season of demonstrating the value of music education through vocal performance, features over 50 students in fifth through seventh grades.
“The Mile of Art is fun and free and a great kick-off to the outdoor Art Walks” said Amy Kettenburg, Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk director. “While there is always something fun at 1st Fridays Art Walk, May will feature a “Mile of Art” as art enthusiasts everywhere are invited to stroll the cultural district of Fairfield, visiting galleries and walking around the Square. We’ve really created an inner and outer art experience with the galleries and venues as well as the open air art gallery on the square. It will feel a little bit like a treasure hunt!”
The Mile of Art will also introduce the ART .2K relay, for the first time. This event is designed for everyone with all abilities and is a race that focuses on art and fun, rather than speed. While some people might call it a marathon or 100 yard dash, the Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk ART .2K relay is a short stroll for the slow and artistic. The inaugural ART .2K team relay race consists of 4 member teams competing for the honor of being the first team to complete a series of artistic projects around the Square. All participants will receive an Art Walk shirt and will compete for prizes valued at more than $300.
The relay stop sponsors will award a prize for the best art produced at each station. The winning relay team will receive a gift basket valued at over $300. Registration is $10 per person and will benefit the Art Walk. Relay sponsors are Fairfield Park and Recreation, Fairfield Nutrition, Vemma and Club Fitness. Participants will gather at the gazebo at 6:45 for registration; races will start about 7:00 pm.
